Turn off the flame, and then turn it back on!

Man oh man, how does it feel to be on tv today? i actually dont know, i didn't watch the news. However! i was filmed.. i think

The footage they recorded today probably wont be aired right away anyways. Theres all that editing that needs to be done before it can be shown on tv. Its a good thing that theres such thing as editing, if there wasnt, the viewers would find out that Jackie was only pipetting plain 'ol H2O. The footage will probably air either tomorrow or the next day? too bad, we might not be home yet, and we'll also have to miss David's band performance.

As for my part in the filming, i thought it was going to be a lot more. They didnt really interview any of the students, and just walked around to record what we were doing. At the time, eDNA and i were preparing mini-preps, so all we did was put media into each tube. We had to flame everything to make sure the pipettes and bottle were sterile. He asked us to turn off the gas, and then turn it back on a few times. I guess thats really good footage? Fire in the lab!

YOU..MUST..GET.. MARRIED.. in order to say in America

WOW... what a long day at UCSF today. i felt like i have been there forever. It has been the latest i ever stayed at UCSF so far. I didnt leave the building until 8:30ish. The bus shuttle was almost empty on the ride back, only a few people were in it. At least the sky wasnt dark yet =D

It was nice to have a little bit of extra sleep today. We didn't have to arrive there until 10 o clock. I took the 9 o clock shuttle, and still arrived pretty early. It allowed me to have some extra time to just surf the web. Before you know it, we started the work with an overview and simple explaination of what our goals was. I think for the most part, the process is pretty simple. First, we just started by splitting the dicty cells that we had the other day. They were pretty confluent, so we loosend up the cells, threw them out, and added new media to the plates.

At 11:30, we had a CPL meeting. i actually have no idea what CPL stands for, but i can tell you that they have food everytime theres a meeting! Today's lunch was indian food. To tell you the truth, i actually never a full indian course before. I have had curry here and there, but todays food was ordered straight from a indian resturant. There was also many variety to choose from. Since i never had a lot of the food, i wanted to try a little bit of everything. The food ended up not being that bad.

The rest of the day was just lab work. we prepared storage vectors to place them into desination vectors. There was a lot of waiting for cells to be ready, incubation time, so while that was happening, i had a chance to actually start in my notebook. i'm proud to say its almost caught up too! i should be caught up by tomorrow!

Thats why its called Hypo-thesis

LAST DAY OF BOOTCAMP!

Man oh man! its already the last day of bootcamp! i'm sure most of us are pretty happy about it. Hopefully that means that we will get to sleep in a little bit more. We first started the day with the question of the day. Today's question was " what is the best thing you can cook?" Cooking as always been a hobby of mine. Even though i dont do it a lot ( thats because i dont really know how besides simple foods) i am always fascinated by cooking. Shows like Hell's Kitchen always keep my eyes glued to the tv screen. i love watching people cook fine-dining style and hope to do some in the future too. We ended the conversation with the explaination of Beer-chicken! it actually sounds pretty cool and i would want to learn how to cook something like that. i might go on july 4th to go check out the competition.

The moment of truth..: our buddies was revealed! OLIVVERRR,(sorry, if you're reading this) haha i'm just excited. i am offically part of the dicty crew and we even have a Igem Dicty Zone. Ryan and allen also share the same buddies. i'm really looking forward to working with everyone. We got together as a crew and reviewd some of the basic info we need to know. Then we proceeded with splitting some of the assigned cells. This part was simple because we handled cells similar to dicty cells before. heres to hoping that they grow well! we'll have to wait until monday to see if they grew or not!

The butthead Cell

today was the presentations for the group ideas. I actually felt like i did a better job than i expected to do yesterday. We did a practice round yesterday and it just felt like i had a lot of details that i needed to go into. This morning, we met up at 9 and did a practice round. Surpisingly, i was able to cover the info the first time around and i didnt have much questions to answer. This extra session really helped me prepare for the bigger presentations because i could ask any questions that i wasnt unsure of. Then before i knew it, it was time to present to all the groups

The bigger group wasnt as nervewracking as i thought it would be. I usually dont have too much trouble presenting in front of people. Most of the time, i feel comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. I knew the info pretty well, but still felt a little nervous about the questions that people were going to ask. I was the 2nd person to present. I was able to share our idea of a braking method and it actually came out pretty well. after my part was finished, i looked over to Oliver and Delquin, and both of them had smiles on their face. i was done.

We had a ice cream party after! goood ice cream and they also announced the winners. Our black team won the subject of Most Creative Project. Mostly because we had the idea to attach two cells together. Everyone in our group got a BearHug coupon and 2 medals! they were fake btw. It ended up being a really good day!

Maybe we should have gotten 7 pizzas

I was assigned to explain one out of the two ideas for the Breaking part of this. We each had individual practice and will present tomorrow to everyone as a whole.

What each person is assigned to speak. maybe i shouldnt post all these pictures up so fast?

we circled up into small groups and then talked about ideas. This poster is our ideas for the Breaking part of the project.

Go online and wiki what Crack is without the K

Said by David when he decided to go into our clubroom. we were just about to discuss the homework, and we all collaborated into answering one of the questions. We didnt know what CRAC-GFP was so we had to find out by going online. I found it really helpful and appreciated the discussion very much. Pictures are shown.

Your guy's 5 minutes is like 45 minutes for Me

Heh, I think for each blog, i will call the title something that was said that i felt was interesting or funny. This quote was said by Arthur today when he was joking about us being gone for so long during the break. Funny guy, and he teaches really well. i was able to understand difficult material for the most part. Why couldnt high school teachers do that? Plus, he enjoys Lost, and i bond very well with anyone who watches Lost.

I decided to write another blog today because i'm running out of time. I'm going to be missing out on Friday of this week so that puts me one blog behind. but besides that, it was like like the other days we had at UCSF. Meeting at 9, listened to a lecture until 1:30pm. Thank god i had that bagel from the cafe or else i would have dropped dead from being so hungry. I was already hungry when the lecture ended, imagine me without breakfast (which i forgot at home b/c i had to go out to catch the bus) I would say that i am able to get all the information from the lectures pretty well. I remember having to sit through lectures last summer and i would always get really sleepy. This time around, i havnt really been sleepy for the most part. Tired, but not as sleepy as i use to be. Lets hope this is able to keep up until after i finish those soon-to-be-coming college lectures.

Random stuff:
- Amazed by how many machines UCSF has to do the different things needed in the lab. It makes mini-preps so much faster
- We got our own sets of micropipettes! AWESOMEEEE
- Looked at cells from the Dicty plates. they look just like mamanlian cells. Brings back the memories from the City College class.

This wasnt much of a blog, but covers some of the highlights of the day. Its getting late, and i still have to read the paper for the JC. Gotta do that now!
Until next time, Ethan

What bootcamp is about

Alarm clock ringing early in the morning. Its only 7, eyes half open. Getting ready quickly is important if i want to get to UCSF in time. Get ready, and skip the breakfast. I walk out to the bus stop at 7:30, catch any of the local buses that are heading inbound. and when i arrive at UCSF parnassus, i am only 3 minutes early before the shuttle leaves. Time is tight, but the good thing is that i'll be on time for the starting days of the Igem experience. Its on the shuttle for Mission Bay's UCSF from there.

So far, its been alright. Its not called bootcamp for nothing. For the past few days, i have been waking up early, and working at mission bay until late night. I get home at around 8:30pm, shower, get something to eat, and then finish any homework or readings. After that, its straight to bed so i wont be tired the next day. I know these two weeks are going to be tougher than the other days. I can already see the tiredness of some of the students during the lecture. Just like real bootcamp, the main point of all of this is to prepare us for what is coming later on the coming weeks. The lectures all have lessons that will be important later on. Even if i sometimes dont completely understand what is being said at first, i am able to keep focus and slowly gain the knowledge. The mentors really do a good job of giving us a chance to read questions too. This week is almost over, and it hasnt be that bad. If we can get through this, i think we'll be fine for the rest of the summer. I'm really looking forward to having a flexible schedule.
